For the last six years, I have answered many thousands of personal emails that you have sent to UK Free TV.

Sadly, I am unable to offer this personal service at the moment.

Until I can restore this service, please can you leave any questions you have on an appropriate page, where they will be answered as soon as possible, or below, if you can't figure out where to ask.

I look forward to your questions!

My television says 'no sattelite reception received' I have been advised that I need a new LNB which I have purchased in the UK.
Does anyone know if this will be compatable with my Portuguese sat. dish
Thanks

The terrestrial Freeview service could be being affected by co-channel interference. See the inversion effect. This does not affect satellite services. (Dave Lindsay)

Yes Dave this is true (pre/post Digital) as they stupidly placed a "light" transmitter on a tall building the other side of town.
Assuming (logically) that signals cannot pass through thousands of feet of earth, the must have placed the transmitter to point into space.
I say this as residents of Margate on the opposite side of (and lower than) Northdown Road , which is higher than the transmitter) obviously would not be able to receive signals improved or not by digital services.
As this issue has been raised for many years even in Parliment (Laura Sandys), both the governement and Freeview(BBC/ITV) have ignored it. Cost I assume ??
What does amaze me, is the vast number of residents this side of Northdown road who qualified for the free Digibox. Which in turn has managed to reduce their reception compared to prior to Digital.
But as Ed Vazey says "it's not our god given right to receive TV signals", just our FORCED Taxation to pay for the BBC Licence.
I am assuming that British Broadcasting means all of Britain and not selective!

John McConnell: I have made a comment on the Margate page which you may be interested in:

Margate (Kent, England) transmitter | ukfree.tv - 10 years of independent, free digital TV advice

I wonder whether the coverage of the Margate transmitter was improved at switchover, in particular whether it serves those areas that you refer to. Judging by the direction of the attennas in photographs, it was only intended to serve the area to the west, possibly around Tivoli Park.

Hi i have sky+ and trying to tune indor arial to freeview chanells. To do this i have to turn the sky+ box off otherwise it will not find any digital chanells but when i turn the sky+ box off the tv tunes ok. You ask why i want to have freeview and sky+ this is because i would like to use the picture in picture (PIP) on my tv so i can keep upto date with the disabled oylimpic watching one main programe and another in PIP.
Any help much appreciated.

Billy: Your problem can be caused by two entirely different reasons, one being connected with the way you have the scart lead from the Freeview box connected into your TV, and the second concerned with whether or not you have the aerial passing though the Sky box because you are using the Sky boxes RF output to feed Sky programmes to a remotely positioned TV.

If the latter does not apply then does your TV have one or two scart sockets?

Thank you for your comments hard to explain setup but will have a try.

1. TV connectedted to sky+ box by HDMI
2. TV has a built in freeview
3. aerial goes into sky+ box then into TV by coax.

a. when i search for channels with sky+ turned off no problem finding the freeview channels.

b. if I then turn sky+ on the picture disappears. If I try to tune the TV with sky+ turned on, it does not find any freeview channels.

c. I think I understand that to use PIP i need both to be working or is there another way to watch with PIP IE: 2 sky channels.
Thanking you in anticipationt.

Billy: Unfortunately even although you have fully described your set up the problem you have can still be caused by two different reasons. However first of all try connecting your aerial straight into the Freeview box and see if that allows you to pick up the channels on an auto-tune, as if it does then that suggests that its the Sky boxes RF modulator that is causing the problem, and so make sure the modulators output is set to somewhere between 62 - 69 as that keeps it well away from any possible clashes with Belmont or Emley Moor, as I am unaware which of the two you receive from.

By the way to alter the RF channel used by the modulator press : services - 4 (system set up) this followed by "0 - 1 - select" and the installers menu will appear, select 4 and alter the channel number. (Note if its a Sky HD box then "system set up" might be 1 rather than 4)

The other point I am not sure about is whether or not when the Sky+ box is activated and it captures the TV that you have countered this by pressing the TV's input selector menu button and selected either AV1 or AV2 scart that the Freeview box is connected into? as that's what you generally have to do on all devices that offers a range of input facilities, and why the input selector button is conveniently placed on the remote control.

Of course if you use the TV's HDMI (2) input for your Sky box then the TV should not auto-switch when the Sky box is taken out of standby, as auto-switching is usually only operable on No1 HDMI input, but if this is done then you have to use the input selector button drop down menu to select HDMI (2) to view the Sky box again.

Thanks that is very detailed however i do not have a freeview box it is encorparated into the tv.

To get sky i select hdmi2 from the tv remote.
When i select tv instead of hdmi2 no signal until i turn sky off.
Think i might have to get a tv man in to sort it.
Tv areal goes into areal in on the back of sky+ box and then out via rf out to the tv.

Billy: Sorry about that mix up, (trying to do two things at the same time!) as I really meant to say try it with the aerial being connected straight into the TV and not through the Sky box, this test verifying (or not!) if its the Sky boxes RF modulator that is causing the problem, although everything else I mentioned regarding the RF socket etc still applies.

The only thing I am curious about is why you are using the Sky boxes "analogue" RF output? is it to feed the Sky programme being viewed to a second TV located in another room? as that's all this facility is ever used for other than maybe a person with a Sky box using it with an old analogue TV, or one without a scart socket, if though the former does not apply (as obviously the latter certainly would not) then the aerial should not be going through the Sky box.

Regarding your PIP, what model of TV do you have?

jb38 (Billy): Do you think that there is the potential for the signal being picked up by the aerial and fed down the RF lead to be at such a low level or so poor that the signal carried along the HDMI cable could be being picked up in the RF lead? Maybe move the RF and HDMI leads apart or try removing the HDMI lead and powering up the Sky box, and then see if reception on the TV is better.
