To deal with the problem you must clear the channel list completely and then rescan - if your box has it in the menus, please the 'installation menu' to do an initial scan or a reset to factory settings or First Time Installation. You MUST delete the entire existing list of channels. On most boxes this technique can be also be used:

Try this:

1) unplug your Freeview box (or idTV) from the mains;

2) unplug the aerial from the Freeview box by disconnecting the cable from the 'RF in' socket;

3) wait 30 seconds;

4) plug Freeview box (or idTV) mains back in;

5) do a complete scan for channels - it will fail without the aerial. (This may be in the installation or initialization menu, and is distinct from any 'add channels option'). Once this is done your channel line up should be empty;

6) reinsert aerial by reconnecting to the 'RF in' connection;

7) do a complete scan for channels again.

The Freeview channel line-up provided by six "multiplexes" - each of which carry five or more TV channels, radio channels, text services and EPG data. In this diagram each ROW represents a multiplex. If you are still missing a whole multiplex (ie everything on the row) you may need to replace your aerial with a wideband type, purchase a larger aerial or you may have interference from a VCR, games console, Sky Digibox or similar.

Adam :

To be able to give any helpful comment we need more information. What radio stations are you trying to receive and normally receive, are they DAB, FM, LW, MW, and also a full postcode? Partial ones don't work in reception checkers.

Dear UK Free TV,

When is the work on the Winter Hill transmitter mast going to stop or be completed? This is the third or fourth week that we have lost most, if not all our channels. The service is a disgrace.

My wife and I are both elderly and housebound with health issues and are sheltering from the coronavirus as we are both vulnerable, and my wife relies on Freeview for most of her television viewing, and when the channels break up, or just aren't even there, she gets very distressed and even cries. You are damaging her mental wellbeing. So sort it out once and for all.

Get it working. Get it fixed. And then leave it well alone.

Regards, and very Annoyed,
David & Rosanna Richards

David Richards: This is an independent technical help website, which has no connection to Freeview, any channel or the transmitter company.

Arqiva who operate the transmitters do not announce completion dates for any engineering work as much of it is dependant on weather conditions being suitable to carry out the work (the engineers cannot work high up the mast in heavy rain or high winds). There has been work going on at numerous transmitter sites across the country, particularly since the fire at Bilsdale to ensure that the structures (some of which are 50+ years old) are still in a safe condition and are not at risk of fire or collapse and to ensure that the transmitter equipment can continue to operate reliably.

David Richards :

If you provide a full postcode we can check your predicted reception and see if there's suggestions to improve your reception.
Is your aerial external on a pole? or in a loft? How old is it? If external have you had a look to make sure it seems intact and is still pointing correctly?
Check all your accessible coax connections to make sure the are connected properly and there's no corrosion or water.
Do you have any aerial amps/splitters to feed more than one TV/Device?

I hope you hadn't tried retuning in the first instance if/when the set said no signal or the pictures were badly pixellated. You can't tune to signals that aren't there or can't be decoded, if you do that it can clear your correct tuning.
