From Wikipedia: RT is funded partly by the licence fee, the remainder of the funding is provided by commercial advertising, because RT is funded partly by the licence fee it shows considerably fewer advertisements than most other channels available in Ireland. The channel is also available online through RT Live and the international version of RT Player. Unlike many other national broadcasters, RT One was late to begin broadcasting in the mornings, and 24-hour transmission only began in the early 1990s. - en.wikipedia.org en.wikipedia.org link icon read more about RTÉ One on wikipedia (summary by Clipped).

Alexander Atkinson: Some non-Freeview HD receivers will show Saorview pictures. For the NI Mux, a Freeview HD receiver will DEFINATELY be required.

A "Full HD" TV is one which can show HD resolutions up to 1080p, i.e. the "full" is the highest resolution. It gives no qualification to any ability to receive Freeview HD signals; this is usually indicated by a "Freeview HD" logo (and the specifications will indicate a DVB-T2 tuner in addition to a DVB-T one).

Your TV Star would be expected to receive Saorview and/or the NI Mux (if the signals are available). Confirm that it receives RT in Portglenone and Ballymoney on UHF channel 39 (618MHz) which is Black Mountain.

The reason that it doesn't receive it in Ballyclare could be to do with:

- the fact that the coverage of the Divis main Freeview signals and the NI Mux from Black Mountain aren't exactly the same.

- or perhaps the signal is weaker and/or perhaps the Group A aerial isn't sufficient at that location to bring in C39.

- or if you have a second aerial pointing to one of the transmitters in the Republic and this is connected to the downlead, then this might be the issue.

I have heard about being able to watch rte program's using a Irish IP address. Does this work and is it legal. Can I switch between the Irish and English ip addresses. Don't want other people in the house to lose there English IP address!

karen moore: This is not an aerial issue as you are receiving the signal.

The issue has come about due to the difference of the picture format of Freeview and Saorview.

Freeview's pictures are encoded using MPEG2 and Saorview's use the later MPEG4 format. For this reason, some Freeview standard definition receivers don't have the capability to show Saorview pictures. Freeview HD receivers have MPEG4 decoders built-in and so will work with Saorview.

karen moore: Or, of course, a Saorview set-top box will work.

But if you get a Saorview HD box hoping to use it to pick up Freeview HD as well, then be aware that it will not.

Kevin Brennan: Because digital television and digital radio (DAB) are different systems.

Refer to the list of DAB transmitters in the South here:

Technical Parameters - ComReg

The RT DAB multiplex is only broadcast from a handful of transmitters, none of which are anywhere near you.

The coverage map, as at November 2008 is here:

RTE Digital Radio - FAQ

Since then, according to the list above, only Kippure has been added.

Paddy: If your RT aerial points roughly due south and is vertical (elements up/down) then it probably points to Clermont Carn and it broadcasts on UHF channel 52.

You don't need a Freeview HD receiver to pick-up the signal from Clermont Carn, although you may find that you get sound but no picture. This will nonetheless give you an idea whether the signal can be received.

You may find that the Saorview channels are in your 800s (i.e. they have already been stored) or you may find that a manual scan of UHF channel 52 adds them.

On the point about what equipment you require, a Freeview HD receiver will definitely work whilst some non-Freeview HD receivers will work, others won't.

The reason is that the picture format of Saorview system is MPEG4 and Freeview standard definition uses the earlier MPEG2 format. This is why using a Freeview receiver for Saorview might give no picture.
