I thought ASTRA1x was the name originally given to satellites at the original 19 degrees East position (for Sky analogue & many others), but that 28.2E was all digital and generallt labelled as ASTRA2x, apart from when satellites were moved to replace those that 'died'.

Is there a reason why SES/ASTRA are now mixing/macthing the names, or was I being too simplistic in my view of how that was done?

Sorry, I should've read Mike's post above before commenting. He explains it well.

My bad!

The only real choice is 'Option 2', to fully auction the franchises once again. It's been 20 years, and this would certainly put to bed Hunt's ludicrous plan for a 'Channel 6' to replace what (essentially) ITV/C3 was created to do almost 60 years ago.

Excellent summary of the services, Briantist!

"But Why should we carry on paying TV licence for? there are hundreds of channels via satellite and 80 odd on freeview... Make BBC as a subscription service then people can make up their own mind to view BBC or not... this is an fairer way of doing it."

I'm sure that would be the government's dream, Rob. The TV Licence wouldn't disappear, the revenue would simply go into the general taxation pot as it does in most European countries.

The BBC would become much smaller, less influential and provide a far worse service. NOBODY watching TV would be financially better off.

Surely the BBC's assets belong to itself, not to the state?

An independent Scotland couldn't seize them as part of an SSB. I suspect the BBC would simply withdraw from Scotland, selling any assets it has in the country.

I would strongly object to an EWNI Licence Fee being used to fund programmes for a foreign country.

This article has one fundamental error - it is for TVL to prove that you are watching/recording Live TV broadcasts, not for someone to prove that the cannot receive them. TVL have no right of access to your property, so there is no circumstances in which you can be forced to demonstrate that you have done these things.
